What's Buzz-worthy: Diamond Kings costs a little more at the retail aisle this year ($27.50 plus tax at Walmart, for example) and the box doesn't guarantee a hit (though they might) so that immediately makes the two-hit hobby boxes at the link above (one auto, one mem) a safer and good buy at present prices if you like the look and lineup of what's here. This one isn't quite as clean visually as two years ago or maybe even last year for the base cards but they do offer up a somewhat firmer frame for images that some may have wanted from the base design. (I like the others better.) That slips this one's grade down a tick for me, though I still think the heavy mix of past legends here helps and with the lower price this one is a fun rip for a collector. A flipper? They might try something else. The rookies here are in three tiers and there are some SPs (not unusual here) as well that look like base cards. The insert lineup also is a familiar one ... about my only criticism here might be the stock and some of the color choices. The corners on the standard rookies are dark and they showcase their corner flaws well. (I think the "canvas" texture happens after a roller is applied to the surface and then it frays easier when the cards are cut.) My highlight card here is perhaps the Mantle, though there are others that aren't bad finds here and then the hit is a decent find as I'm not 100-percent sure they are guaranteed. (This is my first and perhaps last blaster of this one with its retail SRP ... I will probably do a hobby box if/when I do more.)
Product Grade: A-
Box Grade: A- (a hit, a Mantle parallel and some good finds in a few spots ... solid blaster)
Fun Grade: A- (good variety ... good names past and present)
