Fast Five: MLB players who impressed Buzz this week

∀ Fast Five is a quick list that might offer a basic starting point for a themed collection or new focus -- five things that could be fun for a beginner or a new way to add something to your stash if you're a grizzled veteran. This time? Five MLB players who impressed Buzz this week. BIG NAME, BIG GAME Vladimir Guerrero Jr., 1B Toronto Blue Jays -- Rookie Cards in 2019 releases MVP or not, you should all know Guerrero after last season and this year he's atop MLB with four homers in seven games -- and three of those were in a single game against the Yankees on Wednesday night. He's hitting .333 with eight RBI and six runs but I think the key here is that he's a main guy on a team with a crop of young home-grown stars -- and that is a recipe for hobby success if they get things done this season. Keep reading for four more making up the list this time. STILL DELIVERING Wander Franco, 3B-SS Tampa Bay Rays -- Rookie Card in 2021 Bowman's Best; RC logo cards in 2022 This year's big-name newcomer has started off his season with a strong week. 11-for-29 (.379) with five runs, four RBI and even a SB in seven games. Only two others (Eric Hosmer and Jose Ramirez) have more hits (12) but they're far older and nowhere as "on the radar" as he is for cardboard. He'll be showcased in everything this season once releases start flowing well and a start like this one will help all of that demand be maintained if not grow. -- NOTABLE NEWCOMER Seiya Suzuki, OF Chicago Cubs -- MLB Rookie Cards to come in 2022 releases This former Hiroshima Carp star hit 189 homers in nine seasons of Nippon Professional Baseball play before coming to America to join the Cubs. In six games, he's hit .368 (7-for-19) with three homers and 10 RBI ... and that has translated into four Topps Now cards this past week. They aren't, however, his only Topps cards. If you opened 2017 Topps Museum Collection and found World Baseball Classic Relics he was among those players. He also had an array of cards in the new 2021 Topps Chrome NPB release as well as the non-Chromed release from last year. He also has plenty of BBM cards from Japan. -- NOTABLE ... EVEN WHEN HE'S NOT Shohei Ohtani, SP-DH Los Angeles Angels -- MLB Rookie Cards in 2018 releases If you look at MLB pitching leaders, his numbers stand out a bit ... even though they aren't that great overall. He's got 14 strikeouts in just 8 1/3 innings pitched this season but his record is 0-2 with a 7.56 ERA. Only two players have more Ks. With his bat? Well, that video going around with him doing CPR on one of his ASICS bats is appropriate. He's gone 5-for-29 (.172) with just three runs and a stolen base to show for it this year. The homers will come as will the showcase games on the mound ... so any struggles now may help you land bargains from flippers thinking they're in trouble. -- DON'T LOOK NOW ... OR DO, ACTUALLY Kris Bryant, 3B Colorado Rockies -- Rookie Cards in 2015 releases A new name in a new place -- that's often a recipe for good things on new cardboard. While we haven't yet seen an in-pack Rockies card for this established veteran just yet I may be looking (at least for ink) as I'm sold. I was sold on the idea of his bat in Denver before it happened but he's hitting .360 with five runs and two RBI in six games. No homers yet but the first home series was against the Dodgers. One thing notable to me so far? He's on a six-game hit streak and is playing his original team daily through Sunday ... I think this weekend could look good. I bet we see his first Coors Field longball and maybe more. -- What would you want to see in a future Fast Five?
